Janssen Pharmaceutica has decided to discontinue its sales of the prescription antihistamine Hismanal due to the fact that the allergy marketplace is overly saturated with other antihistamine products. Sales have been on a steady decrease since the announcement that Hismanal has the potential for serious side effects.
The Food and Drug Administration has repeatedly warned that allergy medication Hismanal may cause potentially deadly side effects when patients combine Hismanal with other drugs. More than 1 million prescriptions for Hismanal have been issued, despite new stronger warnings from the FDA. The FDA is still receiving reports from patients who have suffered serious side effects, possibly from patients who did not hear of the warning or those who decided not to discontinue use of Hismanal.
Janssen Pharmaceutica suggests that those consumers who are currently using Hismanal speak with their health care professionals to discuss alternative antihistamines.
Some health professionals are curious as to why Hismanal has continued to be in the marketplace after its competition Seldane was taken off the market due to similar side effects.
No safer alternate currently exists for Hismanal, and FDA's Dr. John Jenkins comments, "We clearly were continuing to evaluate the safety of Hismanal and continued to have concerns. We certainly support Janssen's voluntary decision to stop marketing."
