In an effort to make tires safer for consumers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) plans to implement new regulations that will require tires to run at higher temperatures, for longer periods of time and at faster speeds. The new standards, which may take effect later this month, extend from the Firestone scandal two years ago. Hundreds of people died and countless others suffered severe injuries due to numerous blowouts involving Firestone tires.
The NHTSA says the new criteria will save dozens of lives annually and prevent hundreds of injuries. Drivers of sport-utility vehicles, models most susceptible to tire blowouts because of their tendency to be overloaded, may benefit most from the regulations. Tire manufacturers, angered by the NHTSA's decision, insist the new requirements will cost the industry nearly $400 million each year.
