A new report presented by researchers from the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor suggests cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors may cause acute urinary retention. According to several physicians at the facility, three elderly patients developed urinary retention after taking Vioxx and Celebrex for muscle and arthritis pain. After halting COX-2 therapy, the patients' urinary retention symptoms resolved. The doctors who reported the cases say more studies should be conducted on the drugs' link to the disorder. A spokesperson for Merck & Co., the maker of Vioxx, insists that the drug has never shown "any increased risk of the condition."
