More Infections Seen at Larger Nursing Homes

A new study conducted by German researchers from the University of Ulm reveals that patients who live in large nursing homes or in elderly-care facilities that house residents longer than six months increase their risk of contracting an infection. In the study, researchers examined 47 nursing homes accommodating anywhere from 14 to 283 patients. Results indicated that the greatest risk of infection occurred at larger nursing facilities. Surprisingly, according to the study's authors, factors such as how many patients were residing with wounds or urinary catheters or the experience level of a caretaker did not contribute to an increased risk for the patient.
