According to a new report released by physicians with the University of Florida, the painkiller methadone, sold under the brand name Dolophine, is being misused. Doctors have significantly increased Methadone prescriptions in the last few years due to the high rate of Oxycontin abuse. However, researchers say that patients are now abusing Methadone as well. The report indicates that methadone-related deaths are increasing in Florida, and emergency room visits involving the medication have almost doubled in the last three years. Patients reportedly visit several doctors to obtain multiple prescriptions of the medication. Lawmakers are calling for new legislation to establish a warning system that will help alert pharmacies when a patient is abusing a drug.
