Government Issues Advisory Against Hormone Replacement Therapy

October 16, 2002

The U.S. government issued a warning Tuesday regarding the use of estrogen and progestin supplements to prevent osteoporosis and other ailments. In July, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that long-term treatment with hormone-replacement therapy (HRT) might cause breast cancer, strokes, heart attacks, and blood clots. As a result, the government assigned an independent review board to conduct its own study on the topic. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force concluded that the NIH study was accurate, determining the risks of HRT outweigh the few benefits.

A spokesperson for the panel also announced Tuesday that short-term use of HRT to relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats is not recommended. According to the report, a woman may increase her risk of heart attack and stroke the first year of treatment.
