A new study reveals that medications may lead to serious injuries, birth defects or death in hundreds of infants under the age of 2 each year. Conducted by researchers at George Washington University and the University of Maryland, the study, which appears in this month's issue of Pediatrics, found that from 1997 to 2000, over 3,700 incidences of birth defects and injuries associated with medications used in children or by expectant and breast-feeding mothers were reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Researchers involved in the study say the results emphasize the importance of pediatric drug testing. A federal court recently barred the FDA from requiring drug makers to test medications on children. However, physicians warn that it is often difficult to determine whether an infant died from a drug given to treat an illness or from the illness itself.
