Officer Receives $215,592 in Civil Rights Lawsuit

A Pennsylvania jury awarded $215,592 recently to a white public schools police officer who alleged he was demoted for supporting racial discrimination charges made by several African-American officers. The Pittsburgh school board and Safety Chief Robert Fadzen demoted Ron Mancini from commander to patrol officer in 1998 because he allegedly was the only white officer on the force to defend the black officers. In his suit, Mancini accused school board officials as well as Fadzen of depriving him of his civil rights, including his rights of free speech, freedom of association and due process. School officials claimed Mancini was demoted for sexually harassing another officer.
