One of the nation's leading dietary supplement manufacturers will stop selling products containing ephedra due to increasing safety concerns and rising insurance costs. Twinlab Corporation, the makers of such supplements as Ripped Fuel and Metabolift, made the announcement Monday, saying the company will instead market ephedra-free products. A tentative date has been set for March 31.
Ephedra use has been linked to hypertension, heart palpitations, strokes, seizures and even dozens of deaths. Last month, the American Medical Association urged the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ban products containing the supplement.
