Pfizer officials vowed to get to the bottom of allegations that the company's experimental use of the antibiotic Trovan in Nigeria was improper. In 1996 Pfizer conducted a clinical trial of Trovan during a meningitis outbreak in the African country. Recently, Nigerian officials disclosed that a key component of Pfizer's approval to conduct such experiments was a fake. Pfizer spokeswoman Kate Robins said the company is investigating whether the approval document was indeed backdated to indicate that Nigerian medical officials approved the Trovan study when in fact they did not. "We did not know of any backdated document, and we take this absolutely seriously because clinical conduct is paramount," Robins said.
