Missouri Bar Found Liable in Drunk Driving Accident

A Sugar Creek, Missouri bar must pay $796,000 to the daughter of a woman killed by a drunk driver after jurors determined the tavern was liable in the fatal accident. Dana Rogers and Eldon Sweet were driving on the Missouri 291 bridge over the Missouri River on June 6, 2000 when a man hit the guardrail and swerved over the center line head-on into Rogers' vehicle. Rogers died instantly in the crash.
The man, who had a blood alcohol content of .180, had been drinking for several hours at the Sugar Creek bar, which is operated by a Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Experts revealed during the trial that the man had around 13 drinks in three to three and a half hours while at the VFW bar. A bartender alleged that she attempted to call a cab for the man, but he had already left. The award will be placed in a trust fund for Rogers' six-year-old daughter, Olivia.
