Nearly 200 passengers aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship returned to port Monday suffering from a Norwalk-like virus, the latest incident involving a gastrointestinal illness to plague the cruise line industry. A spokesperson for Carnival revealed that 190 guests and four crew aboard the Fascination, which was carrying 2,428 passengers and 920 crew members, reported Norwalk-like symptoms during the vessel's three-day voyage from Miami to the Bahamas.
Spread through food and water, as well as human touch, the virus causes vomiting and diarrhea for up to 48 hours. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is conducting an investigation of the outbreak and will oversee the cleaning of the ship. Last month, dozens of passengers aboard Holland America's Amsterdam contracted a similar Norwalk-like virus during a 10-day Caribbean cruise.
