The Canadian health ministry has issued a warning to health care professionals about the possible dangers of using the breast cancer medication tamoxifen. Sold in the United States under the brand name Nolvadex, tamoxifen has been linked to stroke, pulmonary embolism and cancer of the uterus. Although Canadian health officials say the benefits of tamoxifen outweigh its risks, they recommend that physicians review the potential side effects with patients before prescribing the drug.
Last month, Britain's Medicines Control Agency ordered an investigation of tamoxifen because of the potential risk of pulmonary embolism in users. In June 2002, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP added a boxed warning and strengthened the Warnings section of the label for Nolvadex because of the drug's link to endometrial cancer, uterine sarcoma, stroke, and pulmonary embolism.
