Women who use Monistat or one of 10 other generic vaginal creams and suppositories should be aware of the possible drug interaction with Coumadin, a prescription blood thinner. Monistat and some other nonprescription vaginal creams contain the anti-fungal drug miconazole, which has been found to cause bleeding in some patients who concurrently take Coumadin.
The Food and Drug Administration suggests that consumers who are taking Coumadin read lists of ingredients in vaginal creams and suppositories to see if they contain miconazole. The FDA has also recently required companies who make the anti-fungal miconazole-containing vaginal creams and suppositories to issue new warning labels for consumers.
