A Massachusetts jury awarded $7 million last week to an 84-year-old man who was the victim of medical malpractice. In November 1998, Ralph Penta of Revere went to Carney Hospital to have his bladder drained because he was having trouble urinating. During the procedure, Dr. Barbara Bassil punctured Penta's colon, causing his bowel contents to drain into his abdomen. After a severe infection ensued, Penta was forced to undergo several operations to remove a majority of his stomach muscle and tissue covering his abdomen. He was hospitalized for over three months.
