A lawsuit was filed last week against a West Virginia treatment center, which offers therapy to troubled teens through outdoor activities such as hiking and camping. In February 2001, the parents of 14-year-old Ryan Lewis brought their son to Ayne Institute, formerly known as Alldredge Academy, in Charleston to participate in a three-month treatment program for his suicidal tendencies. While at the center, Lewis hanged himself from a tree with a tent cord. According to the suit, Lewis told camp instructors he was trying to kill himself but officials failed to notify a physician or a behaviorial health expert. Lewis' parents are suing the center for negligence and fraud.
