According to a new report conducted by the newspaper Lawyers Weekly USA, large jury verdict awards to individual plaintiffs significantly decreased in the year following the September 11 terrorist attacks but increased considerably in the latter months of 2002. The report reveals that only one of the top 10 jury verdict awards in 2001 was granted after September 11. Experts believe juries looked upon personal injury lawsuits in the first year following the attacks as pale in comparison to the tragedy.
Seven of 2002's top 10, however, were reportedly decided in the last three months. In October 2002, a jury awarded $28 billion (later reduced to $28 million) to a California smoker. Last month, Ford Motor Company was hit with a $225 million verdict, the largest personal injury award against an auto manufacturer, in a rollover lawsuit involving Ford's F-150.
