As part of a $6 million settlement reached with 19 states over the antibiotic Zithromax, Pfizer will change the way it advertises the medication. In their complaint, the states alleged the pharmaceutical company misrepresented the antibiotic's performance by calling the drug superior to other medications because it requires fewer doses in less days than other antibiotics. As part of the settlement, Pfizer will spend $2 million on public-service announcements and pay the 19 states $4 million.
Zithromax has been linked to toxic liver damage in patients. Because the liver breaks down the medication, the possibility of liver problems exists for users. The adverse reactions section on Zithromax's labeling was changed in 2000 to warn patients of the drug's link to abnormal liver function, including hepatitis, jaundice and liver failure, which can result in death.
