21 Dead in US Airways Express/Air Midwest Beech 1900D Commuter Plane Crash in Charlotte, North Carolina

A US Airways Express/Air Midwest commuter plane crashed at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport Wednesday morning, killing 19 passengers and two crewmembers. Flight 5481 was departing for Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport when it crashed on takeoff. A spokesperson for US Airways told aviation officials the Beech 1900D turboprop plane clipped a hangar shortly after takeoff and burst into flames. There are no survivors.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials have not determined the cause of the accident, although a team with the National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the incident. According to the FAA, the pilot made an emergency call before the crash but it was cut off before air traffic controllers could acquire any details. The plane took off at 8:45 a.m. EST and was scheduled to land at 9:15 a.m. EST. The accident is the first commercial airline crash in the United States in over one year.
