An explosion ripped through a mining shaft in Moundsville, West Virginia, Wednesday morning killing three mineworkers and injuring three others. The miners, employees of Central Cambria Drilling of Evensburg, Pennsylvania, were about 1,000 feet underground digging a vertical air shaft when the explosion occurred around 1 a.m.
Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the accident, but early indications point to a buildup of methane gas in the two-foot wide mine shaft. McElroy Mining Co., a division of Pittsburgh-based Consolidated Coal Co, owns the mine. The deaths were the first mine-related fatalities in West Virginia in 2003.
