Emotional Problems Often Untreated

May 15, 2001

Unfortunately, according to the United States Surgeon General, almost twenty-five percent of those who suffer from mental illness go untreated. The report found that roughly one in five Americans experiences some type of mental disorder. The report further commented that, "Critical gaps exist between those who need service and those who receive service."

Unfortunately, several factors may contribute to this problem. Misunderstanding of the disease, tight budgets, and limited insurance coverage are all blamed for the growing number of men and women in America who need medical attention and are failing to get it.

The problem escalates when mentally ill people do not receive the proper medical attention and in turn harm themselves or others. For example, Robert W. Pickett, the man who is accused of firing shots outside of the White House recently, has described himself as a mental patient. He produced several documents in court proving that he had attempted suicide twice and had been hospitalized several times. Medical health professionals from Pickett's hometown in Cincinnati commented that they were saddened by this news. "It's sad when you see someone who has an illness to that degree because they have so many options. There are so many medications for clients today that work and so many treatment options," stated Diana McIntosh, director of the Mental Health Access Point in Cincinnati.
