New reports from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that measuring waist circumference and body mass in patients may be a quick and easy way to determine whether or not a patient has a serious disease, such as type 2 Diabetes.
According to the report, it is important to identify health risks associated with obesity. "These are simple, inexpensive and reliable tools for primary care doctors to assess the state of their patients' health," said Dr. Frank Vinicor, who is the director of the CDC's diabetes program. The CDC also published a report showing a 33% increase in the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes over the past ten years. Doctors suspect that obesity is to blame for the increase in diabetes.
Many doctors are suggesting that patients be made aware of their BMI (Body Mass Index) and waist circumference as a tool to guide them towards better health. In fact, waist circumference can be an excellent guide for a person's overall pattern of weight-gain.
