Despite the fact that vaccines exist to prevent many illnesses, almost 70,000 adult men and women in the United States die each year because they do not receive the appropriate vaccinations. According to the Institute of Medicine, many of these people come from lower socio-economic communities.
Government officials blame vaccine manufacturers, accusing the companies of charging too much for many vaccinations. For example, Aventis Pharmaceuticals, the makers of the only vaccine for tetanus/diphtheria in the U.S., has quadrupled the price of the vaccine.
Congress has become interested in the growing problem of rising vaccine costs. Not only do vaccinations prevent illness and reduce overall healthcare costs, but they can also serve as protection against biological warfare.
