Over the last decade, Lyme disease has been on the rise, particularly in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. These states account for 90% of all Lyme disease cases. Lyme disease was first discovered in Lyme, Connecticut in 1975. In 1998, there were 17,000 reported cases of the disease.
Lyme disease may occur when infected deer ticks bite humans. The disease can cause fatigue, fever, joint pain, and chronic arthritis. Lyme disease can also damage the heart and the nervous system if left untreated.
The increased incidence of Lyme disease over the past ten years has been attributed to the popularity of building homes in wooded areas, the realm of the deer tick.
