The family of a seven-year-old boy killed while participating in an after-school program has filed a wrongful-death claim against the Los Angeles Unified School District. Steve Silva was killed September 15, 2000 when the utility cart he was playing on with his friends rolled down an incline, pinning him against a wall, and causing fatal injuries. The 1,300-pound cart, used by maintenance workers at the school, began rolling when one of the children released the brake.
The $84 million claim alleges that the after-school program was inadequately supervised and that the district's employees were responsible for leaving the cart unattended, causing Steve's death. The school district is conducting an investigation into the accident. A Los Angeles Police Department investigation failed to uncover any evidence of criminal negligence.
