A recent Danish study reported that children in daycare are twice as likely to be prescribed antibiotics as their stay-at-home counterparts. Parents of children who attend daycare are concerned about staying home from work to care for their sick children and, therefore, are more likely to ask for antibiotics to shorten their child's illness.
The study followed over 5,000 children for two years, from their birth in 1997 through 1999. Researchers found that 55% of the children in the study were in daycare facilities by their first birthday and nearly half of these children (40% - girls; 51% - boys) were prescribed an antibiotic during that time.
