NHTSA, Nissan Agree to Replace Defective Airbags

April 25, 2003

As part of an agreement reached Thursday with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Nissan will replace passenger-side airbags in 1994 and early 1995 model Nissan Altimas. For several years, numerous public interest groups have called on the NHTSA to recall the airbags due to their connection with severe eye injury on passengers.

According to safety experts, airbags in the Altimas inflate at 160 mph, even in low-speed crashes, and have a tendency to hit passengers' faces. There have been several reports of the airbags causing blindness or other permanent eye injuries. The NHTSA is advising the nearly 200,000 1994 and 1995 Altima owners still on the road to replace their vehicle's airbags as soon as possible.
