Pinellas County, Florida is losing quality family daycare providers because of strict local government regulations on the number of children they can care for. Pinellas County has the strictest limitations in the state on family daycare providers, which are private centers run in individual's homes.
Recently, about 10 family daycare providers petitioned the County Commission to loosen the rules. In a one-year period, the county lost 60 family daycare homes.
Most counties follow state law which limits the number of children in family daycare centers. Pinellas County's stricter requirements provide that family daycare homes can take in no more than five children, and no more than three of those children can be under 2 years of age.
Pinellas County claims that its objective is to protect children.
