NHTSA Gives SUVs Poor Ratings in Latest Rollover Tests

May 23, 2003

Sport utility vehicles continue to test poorly in rollover assessments according to a new study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The NHTSA Tuesday released the results from the inquiry, which examined 14 sport utility vehicles from the 2003 model year. None of the automobiles tested were given a five or four star rating from the agency.

While most models received three out of five stars from the NHTSA, the Cadillac Escalade EXT and the Chevy Avalanche earned two-star rollover ratings. A spokesperson for General Motors expressed dissatisfaction with the test, saying that the agency's mathematical formula for determining rollover safety ratings is flawed. The NHTSA plans to discontinue use of the formula later this year and initiate a moving test.
