The U.S. Attorney has indicted several Federal prison guards in Colorado on charges of inmate abuse. The indictment disclosed several incidents of abuse at the hands of the seven guards charged, some of who are alleged to be part of a group called the "Cowboys." The guards allegedly choked a handcuffed inmate until his eyes bulged, and threatened not to assist fellow guards who criticized their actions.
Officials have known about the "Cowboys" since mid-1999 when one of their members testified that they beat several inmates in 1995 and 1996.
If convicted, the guards face a maximum of 10 years in jail and a maximum fine of $250,000.
