An 18-year-old freshman at the University of Florida died in his sleep after taking the painkiller Oxycontin. One of Matthew Kaminer's fraternity brothers in the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity handed him a pill at a birthday party he attended after a Passover seder, where he had some wine. Kaminer died in his sleep that night after taking one Oxycontin tablet.
Two of his friends have been charged with manslaughter in connection with the April 20, 2000 incident. Ying Che "Dan" Lo is charged with stealing the Oxycontin pill form the Eckerd pharmacy where he worked part-time while attending pharmacy school at the university. Naeem D. Lakhani is the fraternity brother who gave Kaminer the pill. Both Lo and Lakhani are 19 years old.
Oxycontin is synthetic morphine. Hundreds of Oxycontin-related deaths in the United States have been reported. Purdue Pharma, the drug's manufacturer, recently stopped shipping Oxycontin in its largest dose (160 milligrams) and is taking steps to educate people about the dangers of misusing the drug.
