The majority of injury-related child deaths occur from May through August when kids are out of school and generally unsupervised. For that reason, the National Safe Kids Campaign, launched in 1988, is working to publicize unintentional childhood injuries.
Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop is the chairman of the campaign. Since the campaign's inception, the number of childhood injuries has decreased by 3%. Experts say that increasing child supervision can prevent the majority of injuries. Also, basic safety measures such as wearing helmets while biking or roller-skating will help keep children safe.
The National Safe Kids Campaign estimates that during the summer of 2001, over 3 million children will require emergency medical treatment as a result of preventable accidents.
