New guidelines issued by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) are designed to inform people about COPD. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the world. Only heart disease, cancer and stroke cause more deaths worldwide.
GOLD's report includes information and guidelines on assessing and monitoring patients, reducing risk factors, and treating the disease. It encourages efforts on early detection of the disease so that risk factors can be decreased and a person's quality of life may be improved. Smoking is the primary risk factor for COPD. Some of the symptoms of COPD, as listed in GOLD's report, are phlegm, coughing and extended recovery periods from viral and bacterial illnesses.
