Air Rage Forces Flights To Divert

June 13, 2001

Two separate international flights were forced to land at Bangor International Airport in Maine to unload disruptive passengers. A British Airways flight from England to Mexico City and a Britannia Air flight from England to Cancun, Mexico were both forced to land in Bangor.

The British Airways flight stopped in Bangor to unload two British passengers who were disrupting the flight. The two men, ages 38 and 55, were arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct.

A fight between lovers caused the Britannia Air flight to make the unscheduled stop. After an argument started, the two allegedly struck each other. The male became increasingly aggressive and five passengers were able to restrain him until the plane landed in Maine.

All three men were arrested and spent the night in jail.

Annually, about 10 flights stop at Bangor International Airport to unload disruptive passengers. The airport is the first available for flights approaching North America and the last option for those heading out over the Atlantic for Europe.
