Elastic Compression Stockings May Prevent DVT

June 13, 2001

Extended flights can lead to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a serious condition where blood clots form in the major arteries of the body. Researchers have found that elastic compression stockings can decrease the risk of DVT, also known as "Economy Class Syndrome."

The major risk factor for deep vein thrombosis is a long period of immobilization, such as occurs on extended airplane or bus trips. For instance, the cramped space in airplanes allows for little movement and, therefore, increases the risk of developing DVT, which can be life threatening if a clot moves into the brain or lungs.

The research, which is reported in The Lancet, studied a group of people both before and after long plane flights. The study included 230 people over the age of 50 who took a flight in excess of 8 hours. Half of the group was given the elastic compression stockings to wear during the flight.

The researchers found that none of the passengers wearing the stockings developed blood clots. 10% of the group without stockings did develop minor blood clots. Most such minor clots go away without treatment, however, some of the participants were given blood thinners as a precaution. The researchers did note that occasionally minor clots progress and require treatment.
