The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are cracking down on Internet sales of colloidal silver products. Sites on the web market these products as cures for illnesses ranging from herpes to AIDS to yeast infections. However, the FDA issued a final ruling in late 1999 prohibiting colloidal silver products from being marketed as treatment for these illnesses.
The FDA expressly prohibited making specific claims of disease treatment. However, the ruling does allow for the marketing of these products as dietary supplements. When FDA and FTC officials encounter a website containing such unapproved claims, the agencies send emails to warn the provider that it is not complying with the FDA ruling. However, such attempts to curb the sale of colloidal silver over the Internet have not proven effective. The FDA and FTC are planning to announce shortly that they will institute severe penalties including fines and seizure of products of those companies that continue to violate the ruling. This enforcement effort is called "Operation Cure.All."
