Today, a Florida attorney announced the filing of a $1 billion lawsuit against Firestone Tires on behalf of the Herrera family. Two members of the family were killed and three others seriously injured when their Firestone equipped Ford Explorer rolled over on the Florida Turnpike after a tire failure.
The family was returning home to Fort Lauderdale after a trip to Disney World when the accident occurred. The attorney representing the family called the $1 billion claim reasonable and necessary in order to encourage Firestone to produce safer tires. The tires mounted on the Herrera's Explorer were Firestone Wilderness ATs, which were part of the massive recall effort begun in August 2000.
