The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a report yesterday detailing the increasing number of runway incursions at U.S. airports. The report focused on the reason for the increase and possible remedies. According to FAA spokespeople, Los Angeles International and Chicago' O'Hare have the worse ground collision record. The agency said that several serious ground accidents nearly occurred at both of these facilities.
Most near misses involve non-commercial, smaller aircraft. However, the agency is currently investigating an incident in Dallas where an American Airlines jet nearly collided with a cargo plane during takeoff. Reducing runway close calls is the number one goal of the National Transportation Safety Board.
