A New Workplace Hazard? Computer Vision Syndrome

June 25, 2001

Ophthalmologists have begun diagnosing a new disorder, "Computer Vision Syndrome." Computer Vision Syndrome occurs when a person stares from a particular distance for a prolonged period of time, giving the eyes little or no rest. To date, long-term computer use has not been connected to serious eye damage. Ophthalmologists are, however, seeing more and more patients with eye problems caused by intensive computer use. Doctors also site glare caused by poor lighting, reflections from the computer screen, and decreased eye lubrication from insufficient blinking, as contributing causes of Computer Vision Syndrome.

A spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests that people who use computers blink often to lubricate the surface of the eye. In addition, PC users should use optical infinity - looking off into the distance - every hour or so to give their eyes a rest from the screen. Other suggestions for eye safety include choosing a monitor that tilts and has both contrast and brightness controls, using an adjustable chair, and placing materials that require frequent use in a document holder.
