DeConna Ice Cream Company will change the label of its popular Big Daddy Reduced Fat Ice Cream to indicate accurate nutritional values. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel recently tested the product and found the ice cream had three times the calories and over two times the carbohydrates than the label indicated.
DeConna's president said that shipment of the product has stopped until new cartons arrive. DeConna claims that the mistake was an honest error.
Mitch Lipka, consumer writer for the Sun-Sentinel, decided to test the ice cream after realizing that it was much lower in calories and fat than comparable low-fat ice creams. Lipka noticed that people using Weight Watchers' point system were especially fond of the treat. Big Daddy had a rating of 2 under the system, equivalent to an apple. Based on its actual fat and calorie content, Big Daddy should have received a rating of 7, comparable to a donut!
