Two brothers were injured yesterday as the personal watercraft they were riding jumped a lakebed and collided with a tree. Benjamin Bernard, 11, was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg where he underwent surgery for a fractured skull and blood clot on the brain. His younger brother, Daniel Bernard, 9, suffered only minor injuries.
The boys had borrowed the Yamaha Waverunner, a descendant of the Jet-Ski, from a family friend. Observers say that the lake where the accident occurred is much too small to safely operate any motorized vessel, much less a Waverunner capable of speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. A spokesperson for the law enforcement agency in charge of the investigation, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said that it is illegal for anyone under the age of 14 to operate a personal watercraft.
