The president of Sulzer Orthopedics was fired yesterday after the company endured months of turmoil associated with the recall of thousands of defective hip and knee replacements. Gary Sabins was relieved from his post by Sulzer Orthopedics' Swiss based parent company, Sulzer Medica.
Sulzer recalled the defective hip and knee products after a manufacturing flaw caused the implants to resist bonding to patients' bones. Thousands of people will likely require surgery to correct the problem. While the remedial surgical procedures themselves can cost up to $50,000, Sulzer has been hammered with over 800 personal injury lawsuits accusing the company of negligently manufacturing its products.
