July 6, 2001

Three Pennsylvania residents were killed in fireworks accidents over the Fourth of July holiday. The first incident occurred on Tuesday in Altoona when a pipe struck and killed a 9-year-old boy after it flew out of an exploding cannon.

On Wednesday, another cannon exploded, hurling shrapnel through the air, killing 22-year-old Andrew Shull. A 7-year-old bystander was seriously injured. In a separate incident also on Wednesday, John Ziomek of Wilkes-Barre was killed while looking into a pipe containing explosives.
