The parasailing accident that killed a mother and her daughter at Fort Myers Beach, Florida last week was not the first for employees of AA Parasail. Apparently workers now employed by AA were involved in a similar fatal accident about two years ago. In that incident, Edward Iddon, 36, was killed when he fell more than 100 feet after his parasail harness broke.
After this most recent tragedy, Fort Myers Beach officials suspended AA's operating license on Thursday, pending the outcome of a Coast Guard investigation. While neither the Coast Guard, nor any other State or Federal agency directly regulates parasailing operations, the Coast Guard will look into AA Parasail's maintenance records and operational history, along with weather conditions at the time of the accident.
Industry critics claim that parasail operators often push safety limits in order to give clients a more thrilling ride than their competitors. Some operators send clients too high or too close to structures and other parasailers. Critics say that the time is now for the industry to aggressively self-regulate or for the government to step-in.
