Ford to Provide Hands-Free Phone Cradle

July 17, 2001

Later this year, Ford Motor Company will install a hands-free wireless phone cradle in many of its new vehicles. Cellport Systems Inc. produces the cradles Ford plans to offer. The device allows drivers to operate their cellular phones with voice commands. The adapters plug into a center console base and are available to fit many popular wireless phone models.

The cradles will be dealer-installed options on the Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable, and the Ford Windstar minivan later this year. By the middle of 2002, adapter kits will be available for the rest of Ford's vehicles.

Ford's announcement coincides with growing scrutiny of the dangers of driving while using cellular phones. New York recently banned hand-held cell phone use in cars. Legislation of this sort is pending in many other states.

The auto and wireless industries are scrambling to provide drivers safer ways to use their phones.
