Florida Communities May Ban Cell Phones While Driving

July 20, 2001

Recently, Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth issued an opinion allowing local governments to impose their own regulations on cell phone use. The opinion was a response to a recent inquiry from a Dade County community seeking permission to pass a ban on hand-held cell phone use while driving.

Butterworth said that local governments have the authority to enact community cell phone regulations as there is no state law on the subject.

Recently, New York banned drivers from using hand-held cell phones. The law allows drivers to use hands-free devices such as speakerphones and headsets.
