TWA Flight Makes Emergency Landing

Trans World Flight 379 from St. Louis to San Jose made an emergency landing at Whiteman Air Force Base 65 miles southeast of Kansas City, Missouri. None of the 140 passengers on board were injured. During the flight, the pilot's engine trouble indicator light came on. The Air Force released a statement that a catastrophic engine failure created smoke in the cockpit and cabin, forcing the plane to land.
Passengers were served refreshments while they waited for a replacement aircraft to fly them to San Jose.
According to a Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson, modern airplanes are highly sophisticated and can fly on only one engine. However, the spokesperson pointed out that an engine failure is not something to be taken lightly.
