Contrary to popular belief, tanning beds and booths are more harmful to your skin than a day in the sun. Although the ultraviolet radiation is the same, in a tanning bed, you are right next to the "bulb" and may receive a much stronger, quicker dose. According to dermatologists, one 15 to 30 minute tanning session is equivalent to the UV ray exposure from an entire day at the beach. Just like the sun's rays, tanning beds are linked to skin cancer, including deadly melanoma. UV rays may also affect eyesight and the immune system.
Many states regulate tanning salons, requiring salon employees to inform customers of associated risks. However, some states have no such regulations.
