The president of Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. recently announced the company would fight any attempts by government officials to force a recall of additional tires. Bridgestone is Firestone's parent company and vowed to fight in the American court system if necessary. Last year, Firestone recalled 6.5 million tires after a string of tire tread separations and failures were linked hundreds of deaths and injuries. Most of the accidents occurred in the popular Ford Explorer SUV.
NHTSA recently completed an extended review of Firestone tires. After finding a number of defects, officials asked the company to expand the recall. So far, Firestone has refused. NHTSA is now taking steps to force the company to do so.
