Already this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued six "warning letters" to some of America's largest airlines. Familiar companies such as Northwest, American Airlines, Continental, and Delta Air Lines were cited for violating Federal regulations regarding sewage handling and food storage.
Violations included storing meat at temperatures well above the regulated minimum temperature and allowing sewage to leak onto tarmacs.
The number of violations does not surprise representatives of the watchdog group Aviation Consumer Action Project (ACAP). The ACAP estimates that thousands of airline meals violate Federal health standards.
In addition to airlines, passenger railroad and bus companies have received 19 citations so far this year for similar food storage violations. The majority of citations involved storing food at potentially hazardous temperatures, which may encourage bacteria growth and contamination.
